Hello from San Dimas, CA

Sunday November 5, 2023 (Third post of this travelogue)

We are staying at the Bonelli Bluffs RV Resort & Campground  (Google Map).  This is a very large campground with lots of sites very close to one another.  I did some searching on their map and found a site that had quite a bit of “elbow room”.  The campground is beautiful, albeit a bit expensive.  That said everything in California is hugely expensive.  I just filled the truck gas tank with $5.59 fuel!!  Many places are charging over $6.00 per gallon!

We are staying here so that I could attend a very special nostalgia drag racing event. The event is called the Nitro Revival and it is an amazing event that features dragsters out of the 50s and 60s. The event is held at the Irwindale drag strip. I would guess that there were at least 75 original and restored dragsters. I fondly remember many of these dragsters from my early days of being a drag racing fan. At the conclusion of the event they have what is called a “Cackle Fest”. Several dragsters line up on the drag strip at sunset and have their engines running on nitromethane. The sound and header flames are said to be spectacular. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this part of the activity as my back problems became rather severe and I had to return to the camper.

One of the highlights of the event was that I got to visit with Darrell Gwynn who was a drag racer that we worked with on the blower belt project. Pat and I got to know Darrell and his parents very well and it was good to see him again. He was paralyzed in a racing accident and has been confined to a wheelchair for many years. In spite of his handicap, he is still active in the racing community and has a good attitude

That is all for this post
