{"id":937,"date":"2017-07-20T07:47:22","date_gmt":"2017-07-20T13:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beltguy.com\/blog\/?p=937"},"modified":"2017-07-20T07:47:57","modified_gmt":"2017-07-20T13:47:57","slug":"937","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beltguy.com\/Travelogue\/?p=937","title":{"rendered":"Hello from Bangkok, Thailand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Hello from Bangkok, Thailand<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Thursday evening &nbsp;&ndash; July 20, 2017&nbsp;&nbsp; (Sixth&nbsp; post of this travelogue)<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">We are staying at the Holiday Inn Express Siam (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.th\/maps\/place\/13%C2%B044'55.2%22N+100%C2%B031'42.5%22E\/@13.748645,100.526635,17z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d13.748678!4d100.528475\">link to Google Map location of hotel)<\/a><\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">{google_map}13.748678 100.528475{\/google_map}<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Well as usual, I am way behind on my travelogue.&nbsp; I will start this post by describing the Friday night Stampin&rsquo; Up! party.&nbsp; And quite a party it was.&nbsp; They had a huge tent erected, arranged for Thai vendors to be present, had live Thai musicians and dancers, and had several stations with Thai food that you could choose from.&nbsp; In addition, we got special flower bracelets. They even had baby elephants to greet us.&nbsp; I think it took 23 buses to get everyone to that location.&nbsp; I have posted two pictures.&nbsp; The first is a view of the tent and the second is of Pat and I being greeted by one of the baby elephants.&nbsp; Our first stop was a mountain village.&nbsp; We took the standard van to fairly large village and then transferred to a &ldquo;taxi&rdquo;&nbsp; (actually the back of a pickup) and then climbed to more than 4000 feet to the wonderful and beautiful Doi Pui village.&nbsp; In one of the pictures below you will see both poppy flowers and marijuana plants.&nbsp; This part of the country was a very large producer of opium (from poppy plants).&nbsp; The government worked with the farmers to convert their poppy farms to coffee farms.&nbsp; Apparently the effort resulted in a very significant reduction (or at least that is the story).<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_944\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-944\" alt=\"Coffee Beans\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-944 wp-caption aligncenter\" height=\"225\" src=\"http:\/\/beltguy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Coffee-beans-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coffee Beans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Our next stop was Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Buddhist temple far above the city of Chiang Mai.&nbsp; We took the funicular up to the temple and observed the amazing architecture.&nbsp; From there we took the &ldquo;taxi&rdquo; down to the main village and had lunch and visited a jade carving business.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_957\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-957\" alt=\"Some Jade Carvings\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-957 wp-caption aligncenter\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/beltguy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Some-Jade-carvings-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-957\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some Jade Carvings<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">In the afternoon we toured two more Buddhist temples:&nbsp; Indeed when we checked into the hotel in Chiang Mai, we had dinner in the restaurant on our own and Pat had a hamburger and I had a pizza.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">I will cover the second tour in our next blog.<\/span><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<span style=\"font-size:14px;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">We will be leaving early tomorrow to begin our flights home.&nbsp;
