{"id":1438,"date":"2021-10-22T17:19:26","date_gmt":"2021-10-22T23:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beltguy.com\/blog\/?p=1438"},"modified":"2021-10-22T17:19:26","modified_gmt":"2021-10-22T23:19:26","slug":"hello-from-gettysburg-pa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beltguy.com\/Travelogue\/?p=1438","title":{"rendered":"Hello from Gettysburg, PA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello from Gettysburg, PA<\/p>\n<p>Friday evening\u2013 October 22, 2021\u00a0\u00a0 (fifth post of this travelogue)<\/p>\n<p>We are at the Artillery Ridge Campground <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/39%C2%B048'04.0%22N+77%C2%B013'37.2%22W\/@39.8048668,-77.2465265,3813m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d39.8011!4d-77.227\">(Google Maps)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>{google_map}39.8011, -77.2270{\/google_map}<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday we had a laid back day and only drove around the huge campground.\u00a0 The property is about 5 miles long and has been in the family since 1957.\u00a0 They opened it to the public in 1960.\u00a0\u00a0 It has two large lakes and several camp areas, most of which are dry camping\/tent sites.\u00a0 It turned out to be a great campground.\u00a0 By Wednesday were the only campers in the facility.\u00a0 I suspect that it gets rather crowded on the weekend.\u00a0 They have jeeps, horses, and canoes for rent.\u00a0 There is even a sand beach on the lake.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday we toured the Shenandoah National Park.\u00a0 We entered from the north.\u00a0 Our first stop was the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center, where we got to experience a great ranger presentation that focused on how the early settlers farmed and preserved their food.\u00a0 We then continued along Skyline drive to Skyland Rustic Resort where we had a great lunch.\u00a0 Skyline drive is very much like the Blue Ridge Parkway.\u00a0 It is a very twisty road with beautiful views of the valleys far below.<\/p>\n<p>The mountains in this area are quite different from those in Colorado.\u00a0 They do not have the same elevation raise, but we saw a sign showing an elevation of over 6500 feet.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday we drove a relatively short distance to Gettysburg (about 100 miles).<\/p>\n<p>This will be at least our third visit to Gettysburg.\u00a0 The first was in 1980 in our VW bus with all the girls.\u00a0 Lisa even commented that she remembers being here.\u00a0 It was a wonderful visit.\u00a0 At the time they had cassette tapes you could play in your car radio.\u00a0 It told you where to drive on a map and then gave you a narrative about the battle at that location. Our tour was close to a great sunset and the sights were so impressive.
