{"id":1141,"date":"2019-02-14T18:28:06","date_gmt":"2019-02-15T01:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/beltguy.com\/blog\/?p=1141"},"modified":"2019-02-15T04:45:35","modified_gmt":"2019-02-15T11:45:35","slug":"hello-from-kearney-ne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beltguy.com\/Travelogue\/?p=1141","title":{"rendered":"Hello from Kearney, NE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tHello from Kearney, NE\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThursday evening &ndash; February 14, 2019&nbsp;&nbsp; (First post of this travelogue)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tI am in Kearney teaching a four day class that includes bearings, lubrication, and shaft alignment.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The class is being held at the Ockinga Conference Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska, Kearney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/40%C2%B042'05.1%22N+99%C2%B006'22.9%22W\/@40.701418,-99.1085607,470m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d40.701418!4d-99.106372\">(Google map link)<\/a>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n\t{google_map}40.701418, -99.106372{\/google_map}\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe customer is the 309 Task Force (same as the Lincoln assignment about a month ago.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe following is an excerpt from my travelogue for the Lincoln trip:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in\">\n\tThe 309 Task Force is a very interesting organization <a href=\"http:\/\/das.nebraska.gov\/309\/\">(link)<\/a>.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It was created via state legislation over 30 years ago.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Here is a description of the results of that legislation:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in\">\n\t<span style=\"color:black;background:white\">&rdquo;The Mission of the 309 Task Force is to address the state&rsquo;s sizable need for deferred building repairs and improvements to the extent possible with available funding, utilizing those funds wisely and efficiently.&nbsp; The Task Force was created to be an independent entity to prioritize on a statewide level, and then fund the highest priority building renewal projects.&nbsp; The four types of projects allowed are deferred building repair, fire\/life safety, energy conservation, and ADA projects.&nbsp; The Task Force works with state agencies on over 3,000 existing state buildings.<\/span> &ldquo;\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:.5in\">\n\tA significant part of their funding comes from cigarette tax.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>One of the major functions of the task force is to fund training for the state employees who are charged with maintaining\/updating the building.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThis class had 5 students.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>That is a mixed blessing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>Less cats to herd, but less experience shared among the students.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>As was the case with the Lincoln class, these folks have a pretty significant variation in their background.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The class went well and we even had enough time to evaluate a different dial indicator alignment process.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The process seemed to work at the Lincoln session but we had some issues with this evaluation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I will have to contact the company that wrote the software and see if we can figure out what is going on.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tI am staying at the Holiday Inn Express hotel which is a mile or two from the college <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/40%C2%B039'49.8%22N+99%C2%B005'16.0%22W\/@40.663833,-99.0899811,471m\/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d40.663829!4d-99.087787\">(Google map link).<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\" style=\"text-align:center\">\n\t{google_map}40.663829, -99.087787{\/google_map}\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRather than fly, I chose to rent a car and drive here.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>I requested an AWD or four wheel drive and they rented me a 2018 Ford F150 truck.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>It is a fun vehicle to drive.<span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp; <\/span>The drive out here on Sunday was uneventful. <span style=\"mso-spacerun:yes\">&nbsp;<\/span>It is around 380 miles from our house and a bit over 5 &frac12; hours driving time.
